Fly Fishing In Jackson Hole

Hoback River & Granite Creek

Hoback River

Open Season: April 1 - October 31. Runoff season typically runs from mid-May through the first half of July during which time the river is unfishable.

Best Time of Year to Fish: End of run-off through September. During the Salmon Fly hatch

Best Time of Day to Fish: Midday

Species: Snake River Fine-spotted Cutthroat Trout

Access: Lots of easy access (more than can be shown on the map) along Route 189/191. Look for parking areas. Floatable in a raft in higher water. Hardboats not recommended due to one rapids which cannot be seen from the road. Private property from just downstream of Spotted Horse Ranch to Stinking Springs. Private property upstream of the Elk Horn Store & Gas Station (just north of Bondurant)

Hatches: Salmon flies in the middle of June. River is usually muddy, but if there is even 3' of visibility you'll get good fishing. Caddis all summer, especially in the evenings. Size 10 & 12 Yellow Stoneflies most of the summer.

Hoppers from August on.

Flies: Dry Flies: Adams, Humpies, Royal Wulffs, Trudes, Elk Hair Caddis, Tarantulas, Jay-Dave's Hopper, Chernobyl Ant, Power Ant

Nymphs: Beadhead Prince, Hare's Ear, Red Fox Squirrel Tail, George's Brown Stone Rubber Legs, Bitch Creek

Points of Interest: Scenic Hoback Canyon has some interesting geological features and if you follow Granite Creek Road to it's end (about 10 miles) you can relax in Granite Hot Springs

Comments: The Hoback River is a very accessible, easily wade-able classic trout stream. The larger cutthroats will be found in the deeper runs and pools, especially in low water. During warm summers trout will sometimes run up the Hoback from the Snake River in search of cooler water temperatures.

Both the Hoback River and Granite Creek are great places to take kids fishing.

Granite Creek

Access: Granite Creek Road parallels Granite Creek for about 10 miles. Virtually all public land. Just drive until you see good water, which there is plenty of. The section near the Hoback is faster than the upper reaches.

Comments: Fish Granite Creek just like you would the Hoback River.
