Jackson Hole Fishing Report

Sept 13, 2003

Snake River

Here we go. For the last week or so, following a drop in water flows and temperatures, the Snake River has been producing some steady and at times excellent fishing opportunities. We have been turning fish all summer long, but we are now consistently seeing yellow bellies. With colder morning temperatures, fishing has been getting off to a slow start. However, we have been seeing some great late-morning early-afternoon hatches. A plethora of mayflies in different sizes and colors are frequenting the mid-day and afternoon hours. Old-standard, reliable upright wing patterns (size 10-14) such as H&L Variants, Parachutes Hairs Ears, Royal Wulffs, and Parachute Adams will consistently turn fish. If your time on the water happens to be sunny, warmer type weather, don’t forget about your large attractor patterns such as hoppers, chernobyls, and Turcks’ Tarantulas. Although this fall type weather we have been experiencing will keep the hoppers on the ground, some fish will continue to key in on the terrestrial type bugs of mid-summer. So even if you are fishing a fall type day, with lower clouds and colder temperatures, you might think about throwing some attractor type flies as these patterns will always turn some snouts. The first indications of streamer fishing have been solid; we expect this pattern to continue throughout the fall.

Due to the slower mornings, this is a great opportunity to have a relaxed breakfast and enjoy the area. With the smaller fall crowds, traffic slims down and Jackson returns to a slower pace. You will have comfortable and hassle free morning with some great fall fishing in the immediate future. With the late starts of fall Snake River fishing, one is afforded the time to discover all sorts of Jackson Hole activities. Take care of some “must do’s” in the morning hours and then get prepared for a great day of fishing. With the high flows of the previous months, the bigger fish have had a fairly stress free summer – seen fewer flies and in turn have felt fewer flies. The fall weather in the Jackson valley is awesome – beautiful colors and crisp air. Although we are feeling some very cool temperatures at the moment, historically these conditions bring us into a very enjoyable weather pattern. Temperatures will elevate to extremely comfortable levels. It’s our Indian summer. River conditions will change and fly patterns will reflect these changes; don’t hesitate to give the shop a call for up to the minute fishing reports. Fall 2003 should be an outstanding time for Snake River fishing – expect tons of action and be ready for big fish takes.

We look forward to seeing you either in the shop or on the river.
