Snake River & Tributaries
Over
the last week we have experienced cooler temperatures slowing the runoff
process and the fishing on the Snake River has been great. This has
allowed us to fish hatches we normally don’t get to experience,
including PMD’s, Green and Grey Drakes, three different Stoneflies and
blizzard Caddis hatches in the evening.
Currently the Snake River has
returned to runoff stage. Recent warm weather has hurt our water
clarity, putting the fishing off over the past few days. The best bet
for fishing the Snake is large streamers such as J.J.’s Specials in size
4 thourgh 8 and Beadhead Peacock Wooly Buggers in the same sizes. The
Caddis hatches have been so prolific that there has been decent dry-fly
fishing in the evenings and this may be your best time to concentrate on
the Snake. Spin-fishing has been producing, with Panther Martins, Mepps
and Roostertails all working. This is going to be the last of our
snowmelt so we are predicting big improvements for the Snake as early as
next week.
Our tributaries including the Gros
Ventre and the Hoback Rivers currently remain good options for fishing
in the valley. The Hoback River has been producing in the canyon and the
upper Gros Ventre have been very dependable. Similar flies will work for
both rivers - attractor dries and simple nymph patterns. And again
caddis flies have proven to be the best bet for evenings. Good choices
have been yellow and orange Stimulators (size 14, 12, or 10). Red and
orange Turck Tarantulas in size 10 or 12 and 6 and 8 respectively.
Parachute Madam X’s have been consistent producers. Try them in Royal
and Yellow (size 10). Red Fox Squirrel’s, 20 Inchers and good old Hare’s
Ears should be all you need for nymphs.
Due to the increased snow pack
this year we are looking forward to one of our better seasons on the
Snake River in recent years. Those of you that are coming to fish the
Yellowstone Area; come visit our shop and speak with our fly fishing
experts for more detailed information on specific destinations.
