Snake River
Several times each winter we like to keep you updated on the current Snake
River conditions, but as veteran readers of this report know, current
conditions don't necessarily provide an accurate picture of what will happen
this coming fishing season. Only time will tell. You can stay up to date on
current Snake River Basin conditions on our web site by pointing your browsers
to http://www.highcountryflies.com/library/current_conditions.htm.
To summarize the current conditions, the snow-water equivalent of the Snake
River Basin stands at 81% of normal, the Upper Yellowstone and Madison River
drainages stand at 82%, and the Upper Green River currently resides at 81% of
normal. Winter flows out of Jackson Lake are holding at 280 cfs, a low, but
acceptable rate of flow.
Unfortunately, the USGS web site that we use for information on Jackson Lake
water levels has been down for quite some time so we are unable to give you a
definitive report on the level of Jackson Lake. However, we suspect that it is
not too far below the 30-year mean for this time of year.
On a somewhat more positive note, the lower Minadoka Project, i.e. American
Falls Reservoir, (Jackson Lake is the upper most reservoir in the Minadoka
water project) is having above average snowfall. This could be quite beneficial
for our area because there will hopefully be less pressure to move water
downstream from Jackson Lake and Palisades Reservoir if the lower reservoirs
fill without problem.
El Saltamontes, Chile Angling Package
A special friend of High Country Flies, Tom Rosseter, has booked a trip for
two to the El Saltamontes in Chile departing January 20, 2002 and returning
January 26. Tom and his wife will be unable to take the trip and is offering,
to anyone interested, the entire package at 50% off. That comes to $3,450 for
two anglers. Please contact Tom directly if you are interested or want more
details.

If you have the flexibility, this is a fantastic opportunity to fish what is
arguably the best wild, resident brown-trout river in South America and perhaps
the world.
In Next Months Update
The continuing saga of our Wyoming snowpack AND changes to the Wyoming Area
1 (that's us) fishing regulations (that we think you will like).
Until then...
