Guided Fishing Trips in Wyoming -- June

June in the Jackson Hole area is when we start to see some predictable, consistent fishing. Yellowstone Lake opens on June 15 and provides great lake fishing for native Yellowstone cutthroat trout. The ice on Lewis Lake, also in Yellowstone, usually comes off very early in June - if not sooner - and is very good as well (fewer, but bigger, browns and lake trout).

Duck Creek, one hour south of Jackson, offers fine spring creek-style angling for browns and brookies. Normally this creek must be fished with streamers or nymphs until somewhere around mid-June, when the hatches begin. Either way you'll have the opportunity for nice size browns. Beware however...Duck Creek is a technical fishery and one should not go there expecting to catch huge numbers of trout. You have to earn each and every one.

Yellowstone Lake,  provides some of the most consistent fly and spin fishing for trout to be found anywhere. From its June 15 opener through the month of July, good to excellent fishing is the rule, not the exception. This is highly unusual for a lake, which tend to be more finicky than streams. Casting and stripping in Woolly Buggers is by far the preferred method, though the native cutthroats can sometimes be coaxed into taking a dry fly.

Lewis Lake, in southern Yellowstone, is noted for its population of brown and lake trout. It is less consistent than Yellowstone Lake, but provides the opportunity for much larger fish. And if you're lucky, you may get to fish dry flies during the Mahogany Dun or Brown Drake hatches.

We usually fish both Yellowstone and Lewis lakes from 14 1/2' - 16' driftboats equipped with small gas or electric powered motors to help us get around on the lake.

If learning a thing or two about fly fishing lakes interests you, June in the Jackson Hole/Yellowstone area will give you the opportunity you've been looking for. With our ever crowding streams, lakes offer a great chance to get away from the masses and have some fine fishing to boot.

Depending on how the Spring unfolds,it is possible to have fishable water on the Snake River at some point in June. Referring to our Current Jackson Hole Fly Fishing Conditions page is the best way to keep tabs on events as they unfold.
