Green River Fishing Report

Green River, near Pinedale, WY
Current flows at Warren Bridge are 198cfs. The historical 73 year average is around 300cfs. So, if you are thinking of floating the Upper Green, plan accordingly. The river has been supplying fishermen with morning underwater action and afternoon dry-fly fishing. Streamer fishing in the morning, evening, and low-light days have all been productive. The Plate River Flash Fly, Morrish’s Sculpin, and the old stand by JJ Special have become standard streamers for the Upper Green and ones you should always have in your arsenal when fishing there. The BLM section has some great nymphing water, but at these low flows, finding the right holding water can be the real challenge. Hot Wire Prince Nymphs, Rainbow Warriors, and Cadillac Pheasant Tails are some less known nymphs that have fish well for us all year but especially on the Green. For dries, big attractors have been the happenings. Chernobyl’s, Tarantula’s and Hopper patterns have been the ticket for afternoon fishing. Also, look for dry-fly action with BWO (Baetis) and Mahogany Duns. A mixture of dry-fly patterns imitating the lifecycles of these insects should be in your repertoire. Emergers, Adults, and Spent Adults can all be very important. As we move further into the fall mode expect to see more action on top with BWO’s. And, as we move even deeper into fall, the streamer fishing should continue to heighten. This is because, generally as Brown Trout start staging to spawn, they become more aggressive, making them very susceptible to streamers.
Thinking out of the box with different approaches for fishing the Upper Green is necessary this time of year, but it can be very rewarding. As I mentioned earlier, if you are thinking of floating, a good plan is essential. It can make all the difference between a great trip and a nightmare. As always, for up to the minute info, don’t hesitate to contact us here at the shop.
Until next time, good fishing,
